Chios - an island in the Aegean Sea, near the peninsula of Asia Minor . Together with the nearby islands of Psara and Inusesses, it forms the Hyosky prefecture . For a long time considered to be exclusively a "home" Greek resort, the island is rapidly gaining popularity with foreigners, and on that is many reasons . Luxurious beaches surrounded by untouched nature (which is important in the light of the growing ecotourism), the color of local villages, not similar to each other (even the dances are different), and the surprising hospitality of the islanders (where they smile and are they greeting each other?) - Chios leaves a kaleidoscope of impressions that will be long in the head .

The capital is Chios (or Chora).

The tourist infrastructure on the island is still poorly developed, so planning a trip for the high season (July-August) it is necessary to take care of hotel reservation in advance.

Entertainment, sightseeing and attractions of Chios

Chios Fortress is one of the few sights of the capital that survived the tragic events of 1822 and the 1881 earthquake. Originally erected in the 10th century, it was rebuilt and rebuilt many times by the changing owners of the island.

Southern suburb of Chios, Kambos - once the area of residence of noble Genoese families - is now slowly recovering in its former glory. In some of these beautiful villas, surrounded by mandarin tree trees and high walls, hiding them from prying eyes, there are pensions and hotels.

In the Middle Ages a number of settlements were built to protect the island from pirates and invaders, which are called : Medieval villages. They are concentrated in the southern part of the island, in the places where the main source of well-being of Chios, the mastic tree, grows. All the villages are built in the form of fortresses, with narrow tangled streets, connected by arched ceilings, flat roofs and a fortified wall along the perimeter.

Pirgi is famous for its architecture - buildings are created using rare techniques, "xista" - applying to the facade in a special way various geometric figures in the form of patterns, none of which is repeated.

In the Middle Ages a number of settlements were built to protect the island from pirates and invaders, which are called: Medieval villages.

8 km from the village of Olympus It is a cave filled with whimsical "forest" of stalactites and stalagmites, one of the most impressive Greek caves. Open from Tuesday to Sunday, from 11.00 to 19.00. The entrance ticket is € 5 (as of June 2011)

Not far from the village of Emborio there is an archaeological site on the site of an ancient city with an acropolis. In the area of Vrontado, the alleged homeland of Homer, Dascalopetra is on the beach, or the Rock of Homer is the place where, according to legend, he passed on his priceless poetic skills to students. An interesting monastery is Nea Moni, founded in the 11th century by the Byzantine emperor Constantine Monomakh. The main temple of the monastery belongs to the type of octagonal churches, examples of which can be seen only in Chios and Cyprus.

Mosaic covering the walls of the temple is an outstanding example of Byzantine art.
