It is believed that the first production took place protected the village from the plague, and therefore the people still honor this tradition. Khristovykh Theater of Passion
About 1900, the scenic playground in Oberammergau, where generations of gospel stories were played out, acquired the outlines of the theater. The open auditorium under the hinged roof expanded to five thousand seats, and the stage acquired characteristic architectural elements. Every ten years for four centuries the villagers have put on their own a stunning musical performance on the theme of the passions of Christ. The inhabitants of the commune - actors, directors, decorators, costumers, and, of course, the audience.
With each new preparation for the performance between the residents of Oberammergau, heated discussions are held about the scenario, the selection of actors, etc. Serious competition begins for the right to play the main roles. However, every time the "Passion of Christ" admire the public with a touching devotion to tradition, a holy belief in a miracle. Despite frank dilettantism, the play is world famous.
The Marble Crucifixion of Christ
At one time, the marble crucifixion of Christ in the village of Oberammergau was considered the world's largest stone monument. The monument is made of marble, and its performers are personally selected by King Louis of Bavaria. Work on the monument was conducted for about two years by the best Munich masters. At the end of the work, the crucifix was delivered to Oberammergau and set up on the Osterbichl hill. The official opening of the new monument took place in 1875.
Neuschwanstein Castle
Eight kilometers from Oberammergau is the most famous castle in the world - Neuschwanstein. However, he is more famous for Disney's cartoons, in which he was portrayed with astonishing accuracy. However, it is worth agreeing that in a sense the castle of Neuschwanstein is a standard, the collective image of all castles: it lonely rises on a high rock, is equipped with sharp towers and impregnable walls and definitely resembles a real royal fortress.
The work on the castle was completed in 1886, but Neuschwanstein was never completed. The immediate author of the castle is the court architect Edward Riedel. And the construction initiative belonged to King Louis of Bavaria, who since childhood was familiar and close to the area near the village of Hohenschwangau, which is located in the neighborhood of Oberammergau. From the hill on which the castle rises, stunning scenery opens.
Due to its uniqueness, the village of Oberammergau is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. It is an amazing original commune, enveloped in an inimitable atmosphere of devotion to folk traditions and its own unique history.
