A bit of history

The official date of the founding of the city is December 26, 1826. Initially this place was called Frederick Town in honor of the Duke of York and Albena, Prince Frederick. The settlement was incorporated as a military outpost with the aim of strengthening the French presence in Australia. In the western part of the country it became the oldest with a permanent resident population, ahead of Perth and Fremantle for a couple of years. In 1831, it passed under the control of the Swan River colony and was renamed.

For many years, Albeni was the only port in the region and served to connect Britain with its Australian colonial possessions. Unlike Perth and Fremantle, Albeni supported the Federation in 1901. After the role of the main port of the region was intercepted by Freeman, the main sources of the city's economic well-being were forest, fishing, whaling and, with each passing year, increasingly - tourism.

Albeni was almost the last city in the whole country to stop whaling. This happened in 1978

During the First World War, it was from Elbeni that the New Zealand expeditionary corps and the Navy of the Australian Imperial Armed Forces (ANZAK) left for Egypt in October 1914. Thus, Albeni became the last Australian city seen by soldiers: for most of them the tragic tragedy ended. About the proud and sad history of ANZAK in Elbeni still reminds a lot.

80% of the city's electricity needs are provided by the Western wind farm. There are about 18 windmills installed here, which have long become one of the favorite scenes among photographers.
3 things to do in Albany:
  1. To see and photograph the local hit-stone-Dog. The cliff that skirts the road, and the truth is very similar to the muzzle of the mastiff, gawked to the sky. Now the "dog" is forced to wear a "collar" for safety reasons for motorists.
  2. Try local wine. And the inhabitants themselves recognize that winemaking in these places with a cool climate is much weaker than in other regions of Australia. But this does not prevent them from being proud of their "Pinot Noir" and "Chardonnay."
  3. Go to the sea cruise to find whales.
Whales and killer whales swam in the waters from July to October. Although some flocks can be found all year round

Entertainment, excursions and attractions Albeni

Albeni Molod . There are not many historical buildings in the architectural plan . The Anglican Church of St. John was built in 1840 from the local stone and became the first consecrated temple of Western Australia . In its own curious old post office "Old Penny", which now occupies the University of Western Australia and the museum . In the building of the old hospital, the Vancouver Art Center is open, where permanent and temporary art is held . Also, the building of the old court built in 1898 . At the top of King Point there are the ruins of the old fort lighthouse . And the center of modern life of the city is York Street .

In the bay of Albeny there is a brig "Emiti", restored in the 70's. last century. It was built in 1816 in Canada, in New Brunswick, and for several years was used as a merchant ship, cruising between Britain and America. In 1826, the brig sailed from Sydney with the mission of establishing a settlement on the shore of King George's Bay, which was done (and so Albeni emerged).

The inhabitants of Albeni are proud, strangely enough, that the rain has been going on for longer than in Perth. They are sure that due to this their city is more green and pleasant

Memorial in the Peace Park is dedicated to ANZAK . And on the Hill of Clarence there is a memorial of light cavalry . Here is a monument in honor of the Desert Cavalry Corps: a sculpture depicts it an Australian soldier who helps his New Zealand comrade, whose horse is injured . Nearby, also upstairs, the Princess Royal fortress is preserved with fortifications that support in good condition and tools, some of which are quite functional . Here you can oz to gather with a collection of evidence of military history designed to honor the victims of all armed conflicts in which Australia participated, from the Boer War to today . The Museum of Western Australia is located on the Residence Road, opposite the harbor, and both permanent and temporary exhibitions with natural artifacts, objects of everyday life of the first settlers, samples of flora and fauna, etc. are open here.

The entertainment center of Albeni would be Opened in late 2010, and occupies a stunning modern building, resembling the Sydney Theater. It is on the edge of the harbor, and world-class shows are taking place here

Elbeni Neighborhood

The King George Bay, on which Albeni stands, forms a picturesque coastline with many beautiful beaches (safe and not very). The most popular of them is Middletown beach about 4 km from the city center. It is a nice and long sandy beach, which is best for swimming, so a lot of hotels are built near the beach, camping sites and small independent motels are open.

One of the most picturesque gorges is in the Torndirrap National Park . This peculiar canyon was formed by sea water about 1300 - 1600 million years ago . There is also a nearby bridge created by nature from stone boulders above the water . In general, the whole coastline near the national park is considered one of the most beautiful rocky formations in the world . In addition, there is also Wale World, a beautiful whale center with a museum, where there is a 3D cinema, interactive exhibitions and exhibitions devoted to whaling . The central exposition of the museum is the restored whaling vessel "Chaines IV ».

Very beautiful is the Gulf of Two Man, a state-protected area 35 km east of the city. The nature reserve was opened here in 1967 to protect from the extinction a rare species of local birds with a touching name of the shrill shrubby bird. Its strange name was given to the bay in memory of the history of the discovery: in 1803, for the first time - and at the same time - an American whaler and a French ship came into the bay. The beach in the bay is surrounded by a granite ridge with a beautiful view.

The beach of Nanarap is 20 km from Albeni, if you move to the east and is famous for its white sand . It is very beautiful, but not safe for bathers: here on the bottom there are insidious channels with a strong outflow of water from the shore, and rescuers on Nanarapa do not work . But there is excellent fishing and good waves for surfers . Another good beach near Albeni is the sandy Salmon Hole, which looks amazingly beautiful, but descends to the water from the car park here you need 150 steps m . Attention also deserves the small beach of Waterfall with beautiful bizarre stone formations near the water (and without any waterfall) .

These places are famous for the fact that several parts of the beautiful ancient forest and picturesque granite cliffs have been preserved here. The beaches near Torbi are covered with wonderful white sand, and Cape Thor is considered the southernmost point of the continental part of Western Australia. The most famous beach of the bay is Kozi Koner with excellent infrastructure.

Near Albeni one of the oldest rivers in the world - Kalgan - flows. Its age is more than 4 billion years, it originated before the separation of Australia. For comparison, the age of the Nile is only 350 million years. On the river you can go on a cruise on a boat. Also a very popular destination for a trip or trek is Lake Seppings with its beautiful nature.

If you return from natural beauties to man-made ones, you can, for example, go to the old Strawberry Hill Farm. Originally, the cottage was built here in 1831 and although it was partially destroyed and restored, it is still one of the oldest buildings in this part of Australia. In a beautiful garden on the farm, some of the first trees planted here are still growing.

Patrick Taylor's cottage is the oldest surviving estate in Australia, built in the same manner - from interlocking sticks, clay and cow dung . Today in the cottage is open museum . Another interesting old building is the prison for the accused, where previously there were male prisoners . It was built in 1852 . and altered in stone between 1872 and 1875 . At that time the building became colonial prison . There was a lot of about famous criminals, and more - prisoners natives, for they were given the room with wooden beams, which has so far remained thread .
