How to get
A taxi from the airport of Heraklion will take you in an hour and a half and about € 130. From Chania airport it will be 45 minutes and € 70, respectively.
Bus routes connect Georgioupolis with Rethymno, Khania and Heraklion. There are several car, moped and bicycle rental offices in the village.

Georgioupolis beaches
To the east of the river Almyros, towards Rethymno, there is a wide ten-kilometer sandy a beach with a safe, even for small children, a gently sloping entrance to the water. Approximately 700 meters the beach is crossed by another one of the local rivers, surrounded by lush vegetation - Perastikos.
The town beach of Georgioupolis, Kalivaki, lies between the rivers Almyros and Grija Vlihada. The water here is a bizarre mixture of cool and warm currents due to continuously flowing river flows. The beach is sandy, but narrow, and perhaps the main advantage is its isolation and lack of human resources.

There are two supermarkets and many souvenir shops in the village In the mornings there is a small fish market in the port, and in the traditional bakery at the entrance to the village bake delicious bread.
Restaurants
Around the city square there are taverns with tables under canopies, in the open air. Tavern Arkadi on the western outskirts of Kalivaki beach, despite the simplicity, is good food. In the tavern Perastikos leads a bridge across the river of the same name. Sitting at a table, standing right on the beach, you can observe the passing turtles and eels.

Entertainments, excursions and sights of Georgioupolis
The landmark of the village is a small chapel of St. Nicholas, whitening at the end of the breakwater.
Nesting on the riverbanks of birds, turtles and flocks of fish under water, wild landscapes - all this splendor can be enjoyed by renting a boat or catamaran. Also, local tour agencies sell excursions by boat along the bay to the turtle colonies.
To the lake Kurnas, the only fresh lake of natural origin on the island, a tourist tram runs from Georgioupolis. 5 km to the lake you can overcome both by car and by bike. On the tram, you can also reach the village of Argirupoli, known for its unusual natural sources that form waterfalls
3 km from Georgioupolis beach on the hill there is the village of Exopolis, with spectacular views of the coast on one side and mountains on the other.
