Agia Pelagia is a small town, an amphitheater towering over a bay 25 kilometers west of Heraklion. Once a fishing village, and now a lively resort, Agia Pelagia has retained its charm: snow-white houses stand along narrow streets running down from the hill to the sea. The enchanting view opens onto the village from the Novaya Na- tional road, and in the evening, admire the bay that flared up colored lights of taverns and bars.

Beaches of Agia Pelagia

The bay of the town is reliably protected from the winds by rocky cliffs, so the sea is calm in any weather - a factor that attracts everyone here every year more tourists. The beach is sandy, but the entrance to the water is quite sharp, not flat. To the west of the main beach there are less pebbly beaches, more open to the winds in the bays of Kladissos, Peseromura and Mononaftis, and to the east by Ligaria beach.

Be careful, the sea urchins live on the edges of the beaches on rocks.

Entertainment, excursions and attractions of Agia Pelagia

Near the beach there is a miniature chapel - its internal dimensions are only 1 at 1, 5 meters. The church of St. Pelagia, which gave the name to the settlement, is built on a rocky cliff in the place where the icon was found to be a miracle, according to legend.

Two traditional holidays are celebrated in the town - on July 17 St. Maryna is honored, and on October 8 - her the patron saint is Pelagia

5 kilometers to the south-west is the picturesque village of Ahlada. Situated on the hillside in the surrounding countryside, the village has a unique climate and beautiful scenery. Still slightly to the south, on the way to the village of Rhodia, the monastery Savvafianon towers with the chapel of St. Anthony. Go down to the coast and take a course to the west, visit Fodele, a town on the bank of the river, among the orange plantations, where the famous artist El Greco (Domenico Teotokopulos) was born.

There are a lot of water activities: kayaks, motor and sailing boats, bananas, there is a diving center. Photo of Agia Pelagia (17)
