How to get
It is most convenient to get to Pylos from Kalamata where there is an international airport that accepts flights from Europe, as well as Athens, Thessaloniki and Ieraklion . There is a mass of buses between Kalamata and Pylos (about 8 departures a day), as of May 2011 the fare is about 5 EUR, on the way 1 hour 15 minutes . Buses arrive to the central square, there is also a taxi stand that will take you to the hotel, the coast of Costa Navarino, the Castle Methoni , the palace of Nestor and in general to any point of the region (the cost is low, the price is better to negotiate before landing) .

Entertainment, excursions and attractions
On the central square of the city there is a monument to Three Navahams (Admiral ), who distinguished themselves in the Battle of Navarino in 1827 and defeated the Turkish-Egyptian fleet. . Also worthy of attention is the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin with white domes and the house where the Olympic champion Konstantinos Tsiklitiras (1888-1913) was born . Gold medalist of the Stockholm Olympics 1912 of the year in jumps in length and bronze in high jumps . But the main attraction of Pylos is, of course, the ancient fortress of Neocastro, erected by the Turks in 1573 . Today it is considered one of the most beautiful and well preserved in all Greece . On the territory of the Gothic fortification there is the Cathedral of the Transfiguration of Christ the Savior . Working hours: from morning till 15:00 .
Neighborhoods
At the peak of it, strictly across the bay and practically the whole island Sfakitriya is another, more ancient fortress, Paleoka tro ( "paleo" - old, "neo" - new). It was erected in 1278 by the Franks and is at the northern end (in relation to Pylos, of course) of the island of Sfakitriya, at the entrance to Navarino Bay. Near it - the picturesque cave of Nestor.
About 5-7 km from the city towards Kyparissia there are ruins of the palace of Nestor (about 1700-1200 BC). A great place for a half day excursion. Of natural attractions, the main role, of course, is a miniature, but insanely beautiful bay Voidokoilia, which in its outline from the air resembles the heart. And the Gialova lagoon, where pink flamingos arrive during their travels around the world.
