This monastery stored the most valuable icon - the Virgin of Cardiotissa. They say that she healed the suffering and generally experienced many adventures. The monastery is located near the village of Kera, surrounded by mountains. It was built in the 13th century. The famous icon was painted in the 7th century by Saint Lazarus. According to tradition, she treated the infirm and sick, especially helping childless women.
Three times the icon was stolen by the Turks, taken to Constantinople, but she constantly returned to Crete. Even the chains with which the icon was riveted to the marble column did not help.
Kera Cardiotissa monastery is a quiet, peaceful place. Several nuns and abbess live here. The monastery can accommodate up to 25 people. You will be provided with accommodation and food for a while.
