Add a review about the Church of the Holy Apostles

In the northern part of Cologne, above the picturesque square towers the elegant church of the Holy Apostles. Built in the 12th century, it was repeatedly rebuilt, because it has several remarkable features. Firstly, its western tower (in addition to it there are two eastern ones) - 67 m high. This is the third tallest tower among the Romanesque churches of Cologne. Secondly, the main asset of the Catholic Church of the Holy Apostles is the unique stained-glass windows depicting the twelve apostles.

The paragraph of history

This temple has a rich history, the countdown begins at the end of the 9th century, and already in the 10th century here erect the monastery of the Holy Apostles. Until now, the new task of the monastery, which was erected in the first half of the 11th century, is the walls of the main and western cross naves. In 1150 the Apostolic Church underwent considerable restructuring, in particular, atypical at that time the location of the choir in the western part was returned to its traditional position - to the east. And in his place built the same westerstock with a 67-meter tower

In 1192 the temple, like much in Cologne, suffered from a fire, and when the church was restored there appeared a remarkable element - an octagonal dome-lantern. Then the fate of the temple was almost unremarkable, not counting the moment when they wanted to demolish it, but the Apostolic Church happily escaped this fate. In 1860, the city gymnasium, existing to this day, opened here.

This church has a rich history, which dates back to the end of the 9th century, and in the 10th century a monastery of the Holy Apostles is erected here.
As we all remember from history, during the Second World Cologne was bombed by British aircraft, when 95% of the city was destroyed. The same fate befell the Apostolic Church, but already in 1957 the restoration work began here. Capital it was impossible to name them - it was not up to that, so the beginning of a thorough restoration of the temple is only for 1966, and it lasted, it should be said, almost 40 years.

Being a Catholic church, the Apostolic Church was proud to receive September 18, 1965 from Pope Paul VI the title of the Little Papal Basilica. And since January 1, 2010 it has become the main parish church of the city and the center of the Apostolic Catholic community of Cologne
