The oldest bridge in Frankfurt, even the 100th anniversary, has not yet celebrated. Despite the fact that the crossing over Maine at this place in the chronicles is mentioned as early as the beginning of the 13th century, this iron construction was constructed in 1926 and then underwent another global reconstruction already in the 1960s. And yet the place for the city is something of a cult.
First, Alte-Brücke ("Old Bridge") was the only bridge in the whole of Frankfurt until the 1870s. Secondly, in the Middle Ages it also served as a frontal place: for centuries, criminals were dumped from it. Finally, with the construction of the first bridge, a hilarious legend is connected, and the Germans highly respect and cherish them.
If you believe the story, then in the 12-13 centuries Frankfurt was considered one of the most important shopping centers of the Holy Roman Empire. And not the last role in achieving this status was played by the very crossing over the Main, which today is called the "Old Bridge". For the first time, Alte-Brücke is mentioned in the documents of 1222
Of course, for such a long existence the bridge was repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt again . Well, the design that we see today belongs to the year 1926 ., none other than the Chief Burgomaster Ludwig Landman is responsible for its appearance . The bridge that was built under his leadership met not only all the security requirements and served for the needs of the city, but was also considered one of the Frankfurt attractions . Built of eight flying arches, it was gracefully faced with red sandstone . Alas! , two spans were blown up in 1945 . in about the time of the Second World War, and the reconstruction, which took place in the 1960s, decided to erect steel spans in their place to strengthen the structure .
Today the length of the "Old Bridge" in Frankfurt, connecting the Alt-Zaskenhausen quarter with the Old Town , reaches 237 m, and width - 19, 5 m. Right under it, practically in the center of the full-flowing channel of Main, lies the island of Mininzel. This small area of land, overgrown with willows and inhabited by migratory birds, stretches about 300 m in length and only 30 m wide. From the west, Mininzel is crowned by the work of the architect Christoph Makler, a modern building where various exhibitions are held constantly.
Address: Alte Brücke. The four-lane road connecting the streets of Kurt-Schumacher-Straße and Walter-Kolb-Straße passes through the bridge
